STIRRED TANK REACTORS
The early ‘80s saw some of the first stirred tank reactors. These vessels are filled with the right mix of chemicals, set to the proper pressure and temperature, and are then continuously stirred. Unlike, say, a Vesper Martini, an interruption in the stirring could ruin a batch and even allow a runaway reaction to become dangerous! This is a situation calling for unshaken reliability!
EagleBurgmann has been providing rock steady mechanical seals in these applications since the 80's, and we haven't stopped improving our design. Unshaken reliability - that's what we do.

Proven Success
These initial stirred tank reactors were originally fitted with competitor seals. Already in the 80’s these were converted to EagleBurgmann seals, which lead to a significant increase in lifetime. Further optimization further increased lifetime over the years. In pursuit of keeping up with latest advancements, a new seal type, the HSHLV-D was tested with it an average MTBF of 2 to 3 years. One seal recently set a new lifetime record of more than 4 years!
SOLUTION DETAILS: SEAL AND SUPPLY SYSTEM
- Seal type: Agitator with top drive
- Seal: HSHLV-D/160-E5
- Supply system: Closed system (loop) with WED 3160/A001-A1 heat exchanger and SPN 150/L003-D1 refill unit; each seal can be operated separately and in de pen dently of the others
- Barrier medium: Synthetic oil according to ISO VG 10
- Barrier pressure: 120 barg
- Operation mode: A barrier medium circulating rate of >1 m3/h is required to ensure that the seal is fully functional. This value was determined in practical trials. At lower circulating rates, overheating causes damage to the sliding faces
